Why Alpha in the Catholic Church?
Many parishes are looking for simple and effective ways to share the Gospel with their local communities. Alpha is a great solution, as it provides a cozy space so that people from all backgrounds have the opportunity to discuss faith and life. Alpha will help your parish develop a culture of hospitality and listen, to be guided by the Holy Spirit and empower their parishioners in their callings and gifts. And, more importantly, Alpha helps people discover what it means to become a disciple of Jesus, and to do so at their own pace.

What is Alpha?
Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the basics of the Christian faith in a friendly, relaxed environment. It's a place to connect with other people where you can share what's on your mind in a non-judgmental way.
Everyone is welcome, regardless of their origin or beliefs. No two Alphas are the same, yet in every session there are three things: food, talk, and conversation.

The Culture of Alpha
If you run Alpha as an occasional program, that's all it will ever be. But parishes that have committed to running Alpha regularly, making it an essential part of their evangelization plan, have seen their parish move from a maintenance parish to a missionary one. Alpha embodies certain cultures essential to the pastoral renewal of parishes in our time.
Alpha Culture in Parish Life
Invitation and Hospitality Culture
Alpha helps the parish become an evangelizing community. Those who have experienced Alpha naturally want to invite their friends to the next Alpha. Alpha small groups help the parish remember the importance of hospitality, and in particular the importance of the synodal practice of listening to those who come to explore life and faith.
Culture of encounter
John Paul II invites us to welcome the Holy Spirit: “Open yourselves docilely to the gifts of the Spirit! Accept with gratitude and obedience the charisms that the Spirit never ceases to bestow upon us! Do not forget that every charism is given for the common good, that is, for the benefit of the entire Church.” (John Paul II, Pentecost 1998)
Alpha intentionally creates a space for the Holy Spirit to lead people into a personal encounter and relationship with Jesus. People are invited to a personal experience of God’s love through the action of the Holy Spirit via a simple model of prayer. Over time, people learn to pray for one another, which becomes an integral part of parish life.
Missionary discipleship culture

Alpha involves laypeople in the life and mission of the Church. They become effective and confident evangelizers by sharing the impact their encounter and relationship with Jesus has had in their lives. Sharing their stories becomes normal, showing others that evangelism is not just for experts but for everyone.
Leadership culture
In the process of developing missionary disciples, Alpha can help a parish establish a “leadership pipeline.” Leaders are formed as we invite Alpha participants back as helpers, and then to the next Alpha as hosts. Training at each stage is essential to help hosts and helpers walk with others on their journey of exploring faith. Over time, they could become the parish's Alpha leaders or serve in other parish ministries. The desire for co-responsibility in the Church’s mission will then be rooted in service and ministry.
The content of Alpha
Alpha offers various video series designed to spark meaningful conversations. You can find a series that fits your audience and context, helping people explore faith.
15 episodes that include expert commentary from Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa, along with more inspiring stories reflecting transformed lives. Through a close and current approach, this series is specially designed to connect with young adults and accompany them in their faith journey.
A 12-episode series designed for young people, which can be carried out in youth groups and/or schools, with discussions about faith, life, and Jesus. It includes reflections from different leaders, such as Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, and integrates moments of dialogue in each session to facilitate questions and exchange of ideas.
It offers teens a space to ask real questions, share freely, and encounter Jesus in authentic friendship. It's not a class, it's a conversation where faith comes alive. In parishes, schools, and sacramental preparation, Alpha ADOS helps build community and open the door to a deeper relationship with Jesus.
