The Story of Alpha
Alpha began in 1977 at Holy Trinity Brompton (HTB) church in London as a simple course to introduce the basics of the Christian faith.
In 1990, Nicky Gumbel redeveloped Alpha for people outside the Church or who wanted to explore faith for the first time. His approach was to create a welcoming space where people could ask questions and talk freely.
The course began to grow rapidly on HTB, reaching hundreds of participants. This growth sparked the interest of churches from various denominations who wanted to implement Alpha in their own communities.
In 1993, the first Alpha Conference was held, where over 1,000 church leaders gathered at HTB to learn how to run Alpha in their own contexts.
The following year, in 1994, the first series of Alpha videos with Nicky Gumbel was produced, making it easy for the course to be used in churches and communities around the world.
Over time, Alpha continued to grow and adapt to new generations, with resources like Alpha The Series and Alpha Ados.
Millions of people have experienced Alpha, which is now available in over 112 languages and is run in churches, homes, universities, prisons, and workplaces around the world.
The story of Alpha continues to be written every time a church, community, or individual decides to create a space to talk about faith.
